Fat Bikes bring joy to your life. Just ask Brad and Rachel Flament who met at a Fat Bike party a few years ago, fell in love, and married in 2018. These avid bike riders have made Fat Bike riding part of their new life together. Brad and Rachel describe how biking has become an integral part of their relationships with their children and friends.
What was your history of biking?
Both of us raced mountain bikes but never met during that time. All four of our children (ages 9,12,13, and 16) have competed in WORS (Wisconsin Off Road Series) or the Hugh Jass series for many years. Brad has been riding the Hugh Jass series and the WORS Fat Bike races.
Why ride Fat Bikes?
We love being outside. Riding Fat Bikes make us feel like kids again. They are so versatile for all types of riding. For instance we’ll ride a mile on the paved road to the park then take a trail in the woods which leads us to the beach. We love to ride during the winter especially experiencing the beauty of the falling snow.
How have Fat Bikes changed your life?
Fat biking is very social. We have been riding Fat Bikes for multiple years and discovered this entire new group of friends who ride together.
What reaction do you get when you ride your fat bike?
You watch someone’s eyes get big and mouth drop when they see the big tires. It can look really heavy but it’s not. Many of the racers have Fat Bikes weighing just over twenty pounds. Once you convince someone to ride, they are hooked. Those big tires make the bike very comfortable and can ride over everything.
Both of you are active in the Hugh Jass series. What draws you to the series?
Personally we love the party and the fact that the race only takes a half a day of your weekend. The affordable series price and the competition are what draw us to Hugh Jass.
Tell me about your favorite Fat Bike moments?
The best fat biking moments are when we have just had a good snowfall, the trails are groomed and we end up with a huge group that all spontaneously show up to enjoy the perfect snow conditions.
